NHL Rumors: Could the Oilers Trade Evan Bouchard and Stuart Skinner This Offseason?

The Edmonton Oilers could be facing major decisions once their playoff run ends, with rumors swirling about the futures of Evan Bouchard and Stuart Skinner.

According to multiple reports, management under Stan Bowman is exploring all options to strengthen the team’s defense and goaltending.

While Bouchard’s offensive talents are undeniable—ranking fifth among NHL defensemen in points—his defensive lapses have frustrated coaches and fans alike. Meanwhile, Skinner’s recent playoff struggles, combined with Calvin Pickard stepping into the starter’s role, have raised new questions about the Oilers’ long-term plans in goal.

Trade talks heating up around Bouchard and Skinner

Allan Mitchell of The Athletic noted that the Oilers could use Bouchard and Skinner as trade chips to pursue upgrades like Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman or Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson.

Edmonton’s cap situation and heavy no-movement clauses on their roster limit flexibility, making moving younger players an avenue the front office could realistically consider. Although Bouchard has been a playoff force offensively, and Skinner’s regular-season numbers have been solid, the Oilers might determine that retooling is necessary if they fall short of another Stanley Cup Final appearance.

Oilers' offseason plans could hinge on playoff performance

Stan Bowman’s summer strategy will depend heavily on how far Edmonton advances in the postseason. If the Oilers bow out early, the likelihood of significant changes—including potential trades involving Bouchard and Skinner—could rise dramatically.

Fans who have grown attached to the current core may need to prepare for a new direction, as the front office weighs how to build a team capable of finally bringing a Stanley Cup back to Edmonton. Again, this could all change depending on the outcome of their current playoff race.
