Lightning Sign Goalie Jonas Johansson

Jonas Johansson, Tampa Bay Lightning
The Tampa Bay Lightning have done a bit of business in net and have their tandem heading into next season. The Lightning have signed backup goalie Jonas Johansson to a two-year, $1.25 million AAV deal.

Johansson is 29 years old and has started 24 and 18 games for the Lightning since being brought in ahead of the 2023-24 season. He is not a top tier backup by any means with a 3.27 GAA and .892 SV% over the past two seasons as a backup in Tampa Bay, but he won't ever start over 25 games with Andrei Vasilevskiy on the roster.

Johansson was a cheap option that is good enough in his role to come in and give Vasilevskiy some relief on back-to-back nights or against weak opponents. The Lightning have a lot of money allocated to a number of their top players and weren't going to risk ending up with someone who struggles more or costs more in free agency this summer.

With a goalie like Vasilevskiy, a team like Tampa Bay can get away with having a sub-.900 SV% backup goalie to play 1/4 of the games as they were the highest scoring team and will be looking to make more additions to the roster this offseason. Johansson has a .890 career SV% in the NHL, so this season was five points better than that at least.
