NHL Free Agency: Maple Leafs Linked To Scoring Forward This Offseason
Bourne noted that the Leafs will likely be worse off without Marner during the regular season, but Ehlers could be a smart, more cost-effective solution. “Ehlers could be a tempting option, and would leave them room to add something else,” Bourne said, referencing the cap flexibility that could follow if Marner departs. With a projected AAV around $8–8.25 million, Ehlers would cost less than Marner and still provide strong offensive upside.
Why Ehlers Makes Sense in Toronto
Ehlers brings blazing speed, solid two-way play, and underrated offensive production—traits the Leafs could use, especially if they lose both Marner and John Tavares. Bourne emphasized Ehlers’ ability to drive play and produce primary assists, noting that he's been underused in Winnipeg. Despite averaging just 16:26 in ice time, Ehlers has maintained a career pace of 27 goals and 63 points per 82 games.

With over $26 million in projected cap space, Toronto has room to chase Ehlers and still fill out their roster with complementary pieces. While re-signing Marner remains a priority for Leafs GM Brad Treliving, Ehlers represents a strong plan B if negotiations falter or Marner tests the open market.
Jets Still Hope to Keep Ehlers
Despite trade rumors and stalled contract talks, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is hopeful Ehlers will return. He recently told NHL.com that the team plans to resume discussions after Ehlers finishes competing for Denmark at the World Championships. Still, insiders like David Pagnotta suggest Ehlers is likely to explore free agency, with Toronto now firmly among the most logical suitors.
The two players most likely to get heavy contracts after Mitch Marner are Nikolaj Ehlers and Sam Bennett. Both grade out similar to one another, but a key difference is Ehlers' TOI is much lower than Bennett's, so he's a prime candidate for a surge in points. pic.twitter.com/ov6IGH7u6A
