Maple Leafs Rumors: Metropolitan Team Granted Interview with Brendan Shanahan
The axe hasn't yet come down in Toronto on anyone in the Maple Leafs organization, not even team president Brendan Shanahan (though many think it will). But that hasn't stopped the New York Islanders from asking for permission to speak with the Leafs' bossman — nor has it stopped Toronto from granting their wish.
The "Shanaplan" hasn't quite worked out as intended over the last 11 years. The Leafs, have made the playoffs for the last nine seasons, but despite plentiful talent on the roster over that time, have been a huge disappointment in the postseason, only winning a total of two series.
Islanders granted permission to speak with Shanahan as his contract is expiring in Toronto
Shanahan's contract is about to expire, and the Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment board is expected to meet this Thursday. Even before that meeting, however, when it's expected that Shanahan's future with the team will be discussed, the Leafs have reportedly granted the Islanders permission to speak to Shanahan about a front office opportunity.
This would seem to indicate that an extension isn't forthcoming for him to continue in Toronto, though insider Darren Dreger of TSN said today that nothing is cast in stone at this point, though he finds this news a bit puzzling.
"It is unique, if not strange, that MLSE would grant the Islanders permission to reach out and speak with Brendan Shanahan before officially saying, 'Hey, Shanny, we are not offering you a contract extension.'"
Whether or not the Leafs would replace Shanahan's role if he leaves is as yet unknown.
The Islanders relieved long-time president of hockey operations and GM Lou Lamoriello of his duties last month (ironically, he had come to the Islanders from the Maple Leafs in 2018), and are looking for a replacement for one or both positions.
The Isles finished out of the playoffs this season for the second time in four years. They were 23rd overall in the NHL with 82 points, and haven't won a playoff series since 2021.
