NHL Rumors: Canucks Eyeing Islanders' Mathew Barzal In Blockbuster Trade

New York Islanders center Mathew Barzal

The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly weighing a blockbuster trade for New York Islanders star Mathew Barzal as they look to overhaul their roster.

After a disappointing 2024–25 season—just one year after winning the Pacific Division—the Canucks appear ready for a shakeup. With J.T. Miller gone, Brock Boeser likely hitting free agency, and Rick Tocchet no longer behind the bench, the team may see Barzal as the franchise centerpiece they need.

NHL insiders suggest the Canucks have explored a potential deal for the 27-year-old playmaker. The Islanders, now under new leadership following Lou Lamoriello’s departure, could be entering a rebuild, making Barzal a prime trade candidate.

His value could net the Isles a strong return to kickstart their youth movement.

A Barzal Trade Could Be the Canucks’ Boldest Move Yet

One proposed trade scenario making rounds involves Vancouver sending Filip Chytil, top prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki, forward Drew O’Connor, and a 2025 first-round pick to New York in exchange for Barzal.

Though the cost is steep, Barzal is a dynamic top-line center who could instantly elevate the Canucks’ offense with his elite speed and vision. For Vancouver, this move could accelerate their retool while keeping them competitive in an increasingly tough Pacific Division.

For the Islanders, this deal would bring in young talent—Lekkerimäki’s offensive upside, Chytil’s prime years, O’Connor’s depth, and a valuable draft pick—giving them assets to build for the future.

Yet, key questions linger: Is Barzal worth the hefty package? Are the Canucks prepared to part with a first-round pick and a high-potential prospect? The answers could define their offseason strategy.
