Rising Defenseman Alec Regula Signs Multi-Year Extension with Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Alec Regula to a two-year, two-way contract extension worth $775,000 per year at the NHL level. His AHL salary was not disclosed.
The 24-year-old blueliner missed the entire 2024-25 season after suffering a knee injury during training camp with the Boston Bruins. Although the Bruins medically cleared him in December and attempted to send him to the AHL via waivers, the Oilers claimed him.
However, Edmonton’s medical staff disagreed with Boston’s assessment, and while Regula occasionally practiced with the team, he remained on the non-roster list.
Originally set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, Regula now has some security as he aims to reignite his development following a lost year. A third-round pick by Detroit in 2018, he has now been part of four organizations.
While he has performed well in the AHL—posting 77 points (16 goals, 61 assists) and a +42 rating in 163 games, including a league-best +36 with Providence last season—he has yet to secure a consistent NHL opportunity.
Standing at 6’4″ and 212 lbs, the right-shot defenseman could be an intriguing contender for a roster spot in Edmonton next season.
With much of the Oilers’ defense already under contract (aside from top RFA Evan Bouchard), Regula may compete for a depth role, potentially filling the void left by pending UFA John Klingberg. He’ll battle players like Josh Brown, Cam Dineen, and Troy Stecher for a spot.
By the end of his extension, Regula will be 26 and still an RFA—unless he fails to reach 80 NHL games (he currently has 22). In that case, he would qualify for Group VI unrestricted free agency.
