Andrew Mangiapane Done In Washington After Latest Move
Andrew Mangiapane picked a bad time to have his worst NHL season. His three-year, $5.8 million AAV contract has expired, and he'll become an unrestricted free agent. And while the Washington Capitals weren't likely to work too hard to re-sign him after his 28-point season, the fact that Mangiapane switched agents on Monday is likely the telltale sign that he will be moving on.
As the Capitals navigate their off-season plan, it looks like Andrew Mangiapane will be hitting July 1 as a UFA. Also, of note, Mangiapane has switched agents and is now represented by Allain Roy at RSG Hockey.

It's often a sign that something is up when a player changes agents, usually that he isn't happy with the way negotiations have been going (not that we've had any indication that there were any serious talks going on.) As noted by insider David Pagnotta, "it looks like Andrew Mangiapane will be hitting July 1 as a UFA." He tells us that Mangiapane has signed on with Allain Roy of RSG Hockey, thereby ditching Ritchie Winter of Raze Sports.
The 29-year-old had a breakout year back in 2021-22 with the Calgary Flames, racking up 35 goals, nearly doubling his previous career high. That was enough to earn him the $5.8M AAV on a new deal that summer, but he hasn't come close to replicating that output ever since.
The Capitals traded for him last summer hoping he could get back to that type of production, or at least maintain the 40-point mark he had reached for the previous two years, but he was only able to notch 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points while averaging a six-year low 13:02 of ice time this past season.
He will be in for a huge cut in pay on the free agent market, no matter what his new agent has up his sleeve. AFP Analytics has projected Mangiapane for a two-year deal at a $3.8 million AAV.
The Capitals have just $9.3 million in cap space at this point.
