BREAKING NHL NEWS: Mitch Marner Traded to Vegas

It's happening. The Toronto Maple Leafs are finalizing a trade of Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights. He will be signing an 8-year, $12 million AAV contract in a sign-and-trade deal.

Word of a sign-and-trade being negotiated began to surface over the weekend, in connection with another report that indicated that the Leafs were considering hitting the Golden Knights with a tampering charge if they were to sign Marner in free agency. Today's deal, allowing Toronto to salvage something out of losing their 100-point man, will likely put those threats to rest.

TSN's Bob McKenzie is reporting that middle six center Nic Roy is coming to Toronto in return.

Roy, 28, has been a 15-goal, 30-40 point consistent two-way performer down the middle over the last four seasons.  He has two years remaining on his five-year deal with a $3 million cap hit.

Marner spent nine years in Toronto, his hometown, and while he was regularly a top performer in the regular season, with 741 points in 657 games (1.127 points per game), his playoff performances left much to be desired for many around the team, as he has totaled 63 points in 70 postseason games, and scant few in crucial Games 5, 6, and 7 of series.
