NHL Rumors: 3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Alexandar Georgiev

The NHL's free-agent market opens up in a couple of weeks, and the goaltending market is going to be interesting to follow. San Jose Sharks netminder Alexandar Georgiev is expected to hit the open market on July 1, and while he may have struggled last season, there's going to be some interest in adding him as a backup for a number of teams.

Here's three teams to consider as free-agent destinations for the 29-year-old goaltender:

New Jersey Devils

The Devils only have just over $12 million in cap space this summer, and they will try to land an impact top-six forward, which means in order to find Jakob Markstrom a backup partner, they may have to go onto the value side of the market. Georgiev won't cost a ton to sign, and it will be a short-term deal, so it's not a risky avenue to head down, it's just an uncertain one when it comes to results. Georgiev went 7-19-4 last year, with a .875 save percentage.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers need some more depth in the crease and could see Georgiev as a good tandem partner for Ivan Fedotov. Yes, Samuel Ersson is also there, but you'll find teams are trying to ensure they have three capable goaltenders heading into next season. The Flyers have cap space to add all over their lineup, it will be interesting to see how aggressive they get this offseason.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks are expected to trade John Gibson, and will need a veteran backup for Lukas Dostal. Georgiev is familiar to Anaheim, and someone who has shown in the past he's capable if he's on a good team. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek wants to make the playoffs next season, and it's obvious they are going to be aggressive this summer, so now we wait to see if the Gibson trade materializes and if adding Georgiev follows in a couple of weeks.
