NHL Rumors: Martin Necas 'Not Thrilled' In Colorado, Becomes Trade Candidate

Martin Necas has been listed on Sportsnet's Off-Season Trade Board

He was the key piece going to the Colorado Avalanche in the ill-fated decision to trade Mikko Rantanen. Now, according to a report, Martin Necas might not be long for the Avs either. Insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet listed Necas on his Off-Season Trade Board, and painted a grim picture of his future in Denver.

There was a sense Necas wasn’t overly thrilled with his experience in Colorado and that he wants to explore other options.

This report comes as a surprise, especially after Necas got to experience playing regularly on a line with Nathan MacKinnon this season. The former Carolina Hurricane produced a career-best season of 83 points in 79 games, his first time eclipsing the point-per-game mark in this, his 6th full season in the NHL. His 56 assists and 19 minutes average ice time per game were also career highs. But if Necas isn't happy, fans would have no problem moving on from him.

Necas has just one year remaining on his bridge deal

Necas is entering the final year of his two-year bridge deal with a $6.5M cap hit. He’ll become a UFA after the 2025–26 season, and from the sounds of what Kypreos has written, the feeling might be mutual on the whole 'time to move on' thing: If Necas's strained negotiations with the Carolina Hurricanes to get to that short contract done are any indication, it's not likely something the Avalanche want to go through again, after the whole Rantanen affair.

Consider Necas a trade candidate if extension talks with Colorado aren't quick and easy this summer.
