3 Remaining UFA Goalies Left To Sign This Offseason

Ilya Samsonov, Vegas Golden Knights
There has been slim pickings for goalies this offseason, but it is right down to the final choices for teams that need a late addition to their roster. At this point past free agency when it has settled down, it seems more likely that the remaining options in net might not get a contract until late August, September, or even October depending on injuries and what happens. But I could be wrong too and some teams may just be waiting to see if they can pull off a trade first.

The three remaining NHL-caliber goalies left on the market are Ilya Samsonov, James Reimer, and Alexandar Georgiev. None are anything special, but all have proven they can play and be effective at times.

Samsonov should be the most sought-after of the three as he is the youngest and most consistently puts up the better numbers. The 28-year-old just finished up a one-year, $1.8 million AAV deal with the Vegas Golden Knights where he put up a 16-9-4 record, 2.82 GAA, .890 SV%, and two shutouts. Less than half of his starts were quality starts and even though his goals saved above average were below par, it was better than two of his previous three seasons. He may end up getting a similar AAV on his next deal, but it won't exceed $1.8 million. Vegas appears to be going with Akira Schmid as the backup next season to save money and give their 25-year-old a shot.

Reimer is an interesting one because he was never truly a starter in the NHL and has only started over half of the games in a season twice. The 37-year-old has played 15 seasons in the NHL and put up desirable numbers last season for the Buffalo Sabres. He only started 19 games, but was 10-8-2 with a 2.90 GAA, .899 SV%, and a shutout. He had 13 quality starts, which is excellent and was great from the start of February to the third last game of the season, posting a .912 SV% and a 8-3-1 record. He will be cheap as his last contract was $1 million, but he might end up being a third-string to start the season.

Georgiev may have the toughest time finding a place to play, especially in the NHL. The San Jose Sharks, who were the worst team in the league last season, said they weren't re-signing him after 30 starts to close out the season. He will most definitely have to get a shot as a third-string goalie and work his way back into the light. He posted a 15-26-4 record with a 3.75 GAA, .875 SV%, and no shutouts. The Colorado Avalanche dumped him mid-season after he just wasn't a capable goalie and only 17 of his 47 starts in net were quality starts.
