Canucks Trade Silovs To Penguins

Arturs Silovs, Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have traded goaltender Arturs Silovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round pick. If we are to assign a winner and loser to the trade, I think Pittsburgh won this. But at the same time, the Canucks had to move on from Silovs after signing Thatcher Demko to a big three-year extension in free agency.

The Penguins moved on from Alex Nedeljkovic this offseason, so they were expected to run with Tristan Jarry and Joel Blomqvist as the tandem in the NHL. These two combined for just 47 starts last season and both spent time in the AHL in 2024-25 as well. Bringing in Silovs, who just helped the Abbotsford Canucks to an AHL championship, is a great move, especially where the team is headed. Silovs has one year left on his deal at $850,000 AAV

This opens up the opportunity for the Penguins to move on from Jarry and give him a chance in scenery this offseason, but they will have to retain some salary. In a weak goaltender market, Pittsburgh will be able to trade him.

Stillman is a 22-year-old forward in the final year of his deal at $863,334 AAV, but the Canucks do need more help in the forward prospect department, so it was smart of them to acquire a player back. He is a former first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils from 2021, going 29th overall. He is not the most offensively gifted player, not scoring at a high rate at any level and only putting up four goals and 13 points in 65 games last season split between the Utica Comets and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Stillman's first AHL season prior to 2024-25 was much better, so there is a chance that a change in scenery for him and coming over to a successful team could help him rebound and become the player he can be for the Canucks' sake. Regardless, the fourth isn't worth much and the Penguins should be very happy after this summer trade.
