Insider Links Edmonton Oilers to Boston Bruins Goaltender

The Edmonton Oilers' goaltending situation is once again a focus of conversation this offseason. They were very interested in bringing in Calder Cup MVP Arturs Silovs, but the Vancouver Canucks preferred not to send him to their intra-divisional rival and traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

On Daily Faceoff's The Sheet, Jeff Marek says there's another American Hockey League award-winning goalie (and former Canucks netminder) that could be—should be, he says—on the Oilers' radar: The "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award winner for AHL's most outstanding goaltender in 2025, Michael DiPietro.

Marek says that DiPietro, after a couple of sensational seasons with the Providence Bruins, is "ready for prime time."

Could the Oilers try to land Bruins goalie Michael DiPietro?

"If I'm the Edmonton Oilers, the minute I see Michael DiPietro on waivers, I'm putting in a claim," says Marek.

At the moment, there's no room for DiPietro in the Boston Bruins' crease, who are set with the pairing of Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo.

DiPietro went 26-8-5 this past season with a .927 save percentage and a 2.05 goals against average. He followed that up with a .928 Sv% and 1.85 GAA in seven playoff games.

He is 26 now, and it was way back in 2017 when he was a third-round selection of the Canucks in the NHL Draft. Could he have finally figured it out? And could he be the missing piece of the Edmonton goaltending puzzle?

As Marek points out, "I think we're all expecting (Oilers GM) Stan Bowman, by the time training camp rolls around, will have another goaltender there...

"No matter who they bring in, there's going to be a flaw... The elite of the elite are not walking through that door. (But) They don't need a Hall of Fame goaltender to win the Stanley Cup. They just need a goalie that's going to give them one more save than they got last time."
