NHLTR Mock Trade: Canucks send Quinn Hughes to Devils for package including Dougie Hamilton

The 2025 NHL offseason has been very entertaining, to say the least. From huge trades ahead of the NHL Draft, to bold picks throughout, to a number of free agents making surprising choices, it's been very fun to watch this summer. Turns out the fun could be far from over.

At the end of last season, Vancouver Canucks management stated Quinn Hughes eventually wants to play with his brothers in New Jersey. It was a shocking comment to make on a team's captain, and frankly, got the attention of everyone in the media.

“He (Quinn Hughes) has said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.” - Jim Rutherford

While Hughes has two seasons left on his deal at $7.85 million AAV, he doesn't hold any trade protection, and essentially could be moved to any team that provides Canucks' management with the best package. Turns out, Hughes, Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin could all get their wish as the best package may be what the Devils can offer.

NHLTR Mock Trade: Canucks deal Hughes and Dakota Joshua to Devils for Dougie Hamilton, Dawson Mercer and 2026 first-round pick.

The Canucks don't have much for cap space, so while Mercer and Hamilton would be on their radar, they'd need to include Joshua to make the money work. There's also a very good chance they'd make the Devils retain $2 million on Hamilton's remaining contract, which is $9 million AAV for three more seasons.

Hamilton has a full no-movement clause, however is likely open to moving on to play out west in Vancouver. Mercer has a ton of upside and can easily slot in as a top-six winger for the Canucks.

Hughes would get his wish and reunite with his brothers in New Jersey, while Allvin and Rutherford would get a great pull here considering they don't have much leverage in the whole situation. All in all, keep an eye on these two teams, as trade rumors are going to swirl with Hughes having a long-term focus to be closer to family.
