NHL Rumors: Nikolaj Ehlers Reveals Two Things He's Looking For With Next Team
Nikolaj Ehlers targeting warm, low-profile market in free agency
The 29-year-old winger is reportedly taking his time to find the right fit, and according to NHL insiders Darren Dreger and Frank Seravalli, Ehlers is prioritizing two things above all: warm weather and a quiet market.
That preference narrows the field and rules out big-market teams like Toronto and Montreal, despite their interest.
With top UFA Nikolaj Ehlers now down to a few teams he's deciding between, the expectation is that his decision should be made at some point today.

Ehlers’ options thinning - but targeted
Carolina continues to be the most logical suitor, with their ample cap space, analytical system, and laid-back market all aligning with Ehlers’ desires. Tampa Bay and Washington are also in the mix but face cap challenges, and neither city offers quite the low-key environment Ehlers reportedly wants.
Teams like Colorado and possibly even Utah have also checked in, but it’s becoming clear that Ehlers won’t sacrifice personal comfort or market fit just to be the next big splash.

Former Jets star holds strong value
Ehlers is coming off a 63-point season in 69 games, continuing his run of eight straight 20-goal campaigns. He’s expected to command upwards of $8 million annually on a six- or seven-year deal, and with Mitch Marner and Brock Boeser already off the market, he’s arguably the top winger left available.
But unlike typical free agents chasing paychecks or contenders, Ehlers appears intent on lifestyle fit first. Whether it’s Carolina or a surprise warm-market team, don’t expect a rushed decision.
