Sharks Looking To Swap Ferraro For Specific Upgrade
The San Jose Sharks are not done upgrading this offseason as they appear to still be working the phones to try to get multiple things done. According to David Pagnotta, the Sharks are looking to add another top-6 winger and are willing to use Mario Ferraro to get a trade of that magnitude done.
The free agent class that had featured some top-6 wingers has dried up and the Sharks aren't going to find what they're looking for there now. The team also had to get to the cap floor, so they brought in Dmitry Orlov on a two-year deal at $6.5 million AAV, picked up Nick Leddy on waivers with a cap hit of $4 million AAV for one more year, and signed John Klingberg for one year at $4 million. That is three defenders that will play everyday. As of right now, Shakir Mukhamadullin and Jack Thompson are without spots in the everyday lineup and that absolutely has to change.
Ferraro has one year left on his deal and would be a great season-long addition for many teams looking to upgrade their back-end for cheap. He is only 25 years old and played well over 21 minutes per game last season and should remain a top-4 option in any situation. Ferraro also has a cap hit of just $3.25 million AAV, but is a UFA after the season.
While it would be good for the Sharks to keep Ferraro, if we look shortly into the future of the team, the left side is going to be very crowded with Henry Thrun, Mukhamadullin, and Sam Dickinson. Ferraro can fetch a nice price and there are definitely wingers that will be on the move. It has been reported that there should be scattered trades throughout the rest of the summer.
To name a few players who have been in trade rumors this summer, Jordan Kyrou, Rickard Rakell, Evan Rodrigues, and Jared McCann could all be options. We'll see what Mike Grier cooks up because he has done a great job building the Sharks through their rebuild so far.
