Report: Pittsburgh Penguins could be sold to Chicago-based family

The Pittsburgh Penguins could be changing hands.

The team has been for sale for several months as the Fenway Sports Group looks to rid themselves of the franchise and the Hoffman family based out of Chicago, appear to be the heavy favorites to close the deal.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Hoffman family was interested in purchasing the Penguins, and adding an NHL team to its ownership stable, which already includes the ECHL’s Florida Everblades.

The Fenway Sports Group put the team on the market not long ago, as they also own the MLB's Boston Red Sox, English Premier League club Liverpool FC, as well as Fenway Park, New England Sports Network and other sports and entertainment properties.

The sale is expected to be for roughly $1.75 billion, which is pretty wild considering FSG purchased the Penguins for $900 million just four years ago. David Hoffman is the head of the Hoffman Family of Companies, and while also owning the Everblades, has several local newspapers under his portfolio, as well as a slew of different companies across several industries, including transportation, financial services and real estate.

The Hoffman's will likely have a last ditch effort to fend off from Mario Lemieux's group, as they've also been very interested in getting their control back on the franchise.

It's a year of transition in Pittsburgh, on and off the ice.
