Troubling Lack Of Interest In Penguins' Jarry?
The Pittsburgh Penguins are still looking to trade a number of their veterans as they attempt to get even younger and commit to the rebuild. There are still players left like Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust, and Tristan Jarry, but the focus here is on the starting goaltender, Jarry.
The goalie market hasn't been the best this offseason, but Jarry remains on the market and the Penguins are able to run with summer acquisition, Arturs Silovs, and last year's breakout, Joel Blomqvist.
Jarry should be the starter going into the season, but Josh Yohe said that "I'd say there's a 70-80% chance he's on this team on opening night. They're certainly willing to move him. I haven't heard of any teams being interested."
If this is the case and Jarry starts the season on the Penguins, it's going to be a battle between Silovs and Blomqvist for the backup role, likely going to Silovs because of what he did in the AHL playoffs last season.
Jarry has been good to great for the Penguins for the most part throughout his tenure with the team. He struggled last season, but found his game and really bounced back. The 30-year-old former second-round pick of the Penguins went 16-12-6 last season with a 3.12 GAA, .893 SV%, two shutouts, and a -4.67 goals saved above expected. For being sent to the minors at one point, those numbers, especially the GSAx are better than expected.
Jarry has a career .909 SV% and the only season where I wouldn't have wanted him on my team is 2024-25 as a whole. He did well down the stretch, which is what some teams may be looking at when debating whether to acquire him. He has three years left on his deal at $5.375 million AAV, and some of that will very likely have to be retained by Pittsburgh. I can see a backup or third string goalie heading back to the Penguins in a trade involving Jarry and I can see one happening before the season as the next month and a half might pick up trade-wise.
