NHL Rumors: Matt Grzelcyk Rejected $1M Offer From Western Conference Team

Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk reportedly turned down a one-year, $1 million contract offer from an unnamed Western Conference team, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic

Despite coming off a strong 40-point campaign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 31-year-old blueliner remains unsigned and is currently on a professional tryout (PTO) with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Western Conference mystery team has not been identified, but speculation has included the Colorado Avalanche, who are dealing with uncertainty around defenseman Samuel Girard’s lower-body injury.

Colorado has just over $1.3 million in cap space and could use a left-shot defenseman, making them a logical candidate. LeBrun also listed the Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, and Anaheim Ducks as potential landing spots if Chicago does not ultimately sign him.

For now, Grzelcyk is betting on himself. By turning down the $1 million offer, he clearly believes that a better fit or payday is out there.

His experience, over 500 NHL games between the Boston Bruins and Penguins, along with a solid season last year, makes him an intriguing depth addition.
