NHL Trade Rumors: Red Wings Linked To Canucks' Quinn Hughes

The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly monitoring Quinn Hughes’ future with the Vancouver Canucks, with growing speculation that the star defenseman could be on the move if Vancouver struggles this season.

Hughes, 25, has two years left on his six-year, $47.1 million deal and can sign an extension in July 2026. Until then, his long-term status remains unresolved.

Reports from Detroit Hockey Now suggest that if Vancouver finds itself in sell mode by the 2026 trade deadline, Detroit could be a prime destination.

While Hughes has long been linked to the New Jersey Devils to reunite with brothers Jack and Luke, his Michigan ties (from playing with the USNTDP in Plymouth and the University of Michigan) make the Red Wings a natural fit.

Detroit Hockey Now's Bob Duff believes Detroit would even consider parting with elite defense prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka to land the Canucks captain.

For Detroit, acquiring Hughes would correct one of the franchise’s biggest recent draft regrets. Back in 2018, the Wings passed on Hughes at sixth overall in favor of Filip Zadina, who is now playing in Europe after an underwhelming NHL run.

Meanwhile, Hughes has piled up 409 points in 433 games and emerged as one of the league’s best blueliners. If Vancouver’s playoff hopes fade and Hughes declines an extension, Detroit could be front and center in trade talks.
