3 Goaltenders Edmonton Oilers Could Trade For in 2025-26

After a ton of questions on why the Edmonton Oilers decided not to address their goaltender concerns, they start the new season blowing a three-goal lead. Stuart Skinner had a couple of costly mistakes, and already, just into the first week of the season, many across the media are wondering which direction Oilers' GM Stan Bowman will take to address his goaltending issues.

Bowman saved money on Connor McDavid's contract, and the same can be said about Jake Walman, and Mattias Ekholm, so now it's up to Bowman to make it count and pull the trigger on the right move. Don't expect to see Skinner and Cal Pickard riding into the Stanley Cup Playoffs together this year, here's who could be targeted in a trade in the coming weeks/months:

Tristan Jarry, Pittsburgh Penguins

The message was very clear when Arturs Silovs started game one of the regular season, and wound up pitching a shutout. Yes, the Penguins had back-to-back games to open the year, but it essentially was a very early indication that Jarry is still available. The 30 year old has two seasons left on his contract after this year, at $5.3 million AAV, and while he owns a 10-team no-trade clause, joining the Cup contending Oilers is likely something he approves. Especially, if he's going to be the number-one goaltender. The price tag isn't significant, so there's certainly going to be some traction here. Keep an eye on these two teams doing business together this season.

Semyon Varlamov, New York Islanders

While Varlamov may not be healthy at the moment, he's working his way back and is going to be one of the most sought after goaltenders on the trade market. The Islanders are keeping Ilya Sorokin in the mix for the foreseeable future, and considering the age difference, a bit of health concerns, and performance, it's certainly the right move for the organization. Varlamov has started in the past, he's played in some big playoff games, and he has a lot to prove, so he's motivated to get back into the crease for a playoff team. Won't be their first choice but could be someone Bowman considers.

Cam Talbot, Detroit Red Wings

While Jarry seems like the logical solution for the next few seasons, Talbot makes a ton of sense as the stop gap for this year only. The 38-year-old is a pending free agent, he's on a reasonable contract at $2.5 million AAV, and he's well aware of what it's like to play in Edmonton when the Oilers are both good, and bad. Talbot's been around the block and could give the Oil a veteran presence to calm the waters when needed. He just doesn't have his game-breaker stuff like he used to, so is this really the 'upgrade' the team is looking for? If it's a short term upgrade, potentially, yes.
