3 Potential Trade Destinations For Red Wings' Berggren
The Detroit Red Wings switched things up this season as three prospects, who had never played a game in the NHL, made the team out of training camp. These players were forwards Emmitt Finnie and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, as well as defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka.
Due to two of the young forwards earning spots on the team and in the lineup for opening night against the Montreal Canadiens, Jonatan Berggren was pushed out and into the press box. After questionable choices with the now 25-year-old through his development, the point at which the Red Wings should trade him has come. There are a few teams that could be good fits for Berggren.
LA Kings
The LA Kings need another forward in the mix, especially now that Corey Perry will miss time on the injured reserve. 29-year-old career AHLer, Jeff Malott, is in the lineup, and although he scored in the first game of the season, that shouldn't be expected. The team has a perfect amount of cap space to bring in Berggren for under $2 million AAV, and it gives them another younger player with potential to contribute at the NHL level. The moves made in the offseason were not good, and the Kings are projected to be worse than they were last season. At least Berggren would have a place in the lineup and could contribute more than Malott would for the time being.
San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks shouldn't have lost their first game against the Vegas Golden Knights with the lead they had and in the fashion it happened. Things happen, but the ice time allocation at forward was interesting. Understandably, Ryan Reaves played a very minimal role and shouldn't play very often, but Adam Gaudette and Jeff Skinner didn't see the ice very often as well. Michael Misa will be in the lineup soon, but there is a definite need for more skill on the Sharks, even if they are bound to finish at the bottom of the league. For a rebuilding team, more young talent is a good thing.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche have Stanley Cup aspirations, but their forward depth is questionable. The team had to move off a couple of players and Gavin Brindley and Zakhar Bardakov made the team out of camp, but Brindley barely saw the ice and Bardakov was in the press box to begin the season. Berggren has at least experienced plenty of NHL action and could slide into the fourth line at worst for the Avalanche. The money would be tight, but he can provide more depth scoring than a few of the other options in the lineup at the moment.
