Reichel has two goals and four points in five games this season and after being a healthy scratch early, earned his spot in the lineup, even up to the first line. It was the perfect showcase for the forward the Blackhawks have been trying to trade since at least the summer. He fell through the cracks in Chicago with the many talented young players coming in, and should find plenty of playing time with the Canucks at this time.
Reichel is in the second and final year of his contract at $1.2 million AAV, but the Canucks are currently dealing with injuries to Filip Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Nils Hoglander, and Teddy Blueger. The Canucks have been on the hunt for a center, and while Reichel isn't the legit top-6 upgrade they were looking for, Vancouver didn't pay much to bring in a young talent that still has potential who can also play center. He was tried at center on the second line in previous seasons, but the Canucks' desperation and opportunity in the lineup should bode well for their new addition.
While Reichel could slot into the second line center role, Max Sasson has three goals in five games, but has averaged less than 11 minutes per game. Reichel should get the best opportunity to succeed he's seen in the NHL on a non-rebuilding team icing better players. This was a trade that had to happen for the Blackhawks and one that should only benefit the Canucks.
