Buffalo Sabres Quickly Headed Towards Major Changes
The Buffalo Sabres are one of just three teams that have yet to get a win to start the 2025-26 season. It is a place where they normally find themselves as they are once again behind the pack and not close to a playoff spot. Stars like Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson have already discussed wanting change and seeing results, and those are two players the Sabres cannot afford to lose if they want to make the playoffs anytime soon.
Frank Seravalli said, "We're into year six of the Kevyn Adams experience in Buffalo, and I know they added Jarmo Kekalainen to their front office. A lot of people felt like that move this summer was him waiting in the wings as the heir apparent."
There were eight years of no playoffs before Adams took over, and the team is still outside of the playoff picture, looking in, with players frustrated that there still hasn't been regular season success. Kekalainen did a good job as the GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets in building up a young core and making the big move when necessary. That is something that will likely have to happen in Buffalo for there to be any real change.
Elliotte Friedman discussed the Sabres' situation, saying, "There are some situations where there's more on the line at the start of the year, and this is one of them. How is the owner going to handle it? How long is this runway going to be?"
The Sabres have only scored two goals in three games, and two of their games have been at home. While team defense and goaltending have seemed to plague Buffalo the past few seasons, that hasn't appeared to be the problem for them early. They are a team most on the hot seat when it comes to early-season success, while the New York Rangers, who they lost to, haven't scored a goal at home through three games, but put up four against the Sabres.
Bigger changes have to be made in Buffalo soon as they are one of the only teams who hasn't started the season on time and are in a hole.
