NHL Rumors: Canucks Are Being Cautious With Kiefer Sherwood

Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood reacts during 2025 game.

The Kiefer Sherwood contract question is front and center in Vancouver.

As Elliotte Friedman noted on Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts podcast, the Vancouver Canucks are weighing their options with the pending UFA after his hot start and OT heroics. The team loves his energy and finishing touch, but past experiences have them taking a slower, data-driven approach before committing long term.

Where caution comes from

Vancouver extended one winger and got burned by health and performance variance, then extended another and kept getting exactly what they paid for.

That split outcome has the front office resisting emotional decisions with Sherwood. He is 30, he plays a high-contact style, and his early shooting rush could regress.

The club wants a larger sample to see if his scoring sticks and if he can thrive with more skilled linemates over a sustained run.

What the Canucks are likely to do next

Expect patience.

A short evaluation window in a top-six role makes sense, followed by term and dollar talks that reflect role, age curve, and special teams usage. If the production holds, a mid-range AAV on shorter term keeps flexibility. If it cools, a team-friendly deal remains possible, Friedman says.

Since joining the Canucks, the 30-year-old has recorded 25 goals and 46 total points across 88 games played, including a team-leading six goals across his first 10 games this season.
