Insider Says 2 Sabres Not Being Traded, But Another Isn't Happy
The Buffalo Sabres are 2-4-0 on the season and it isn't the way they wanted to kick things off with a clean slate. The struggles are good for nobody within the organization, and there's becoming less of a chance that the better players want to stick around and figure it out.
With that being said, David Pagnotta reported, "They do have assets. (Rasmus) Dahlin, they're not moving, (Tage) Thompson, they're not moving. Owen Power is not happy. He hasn't been happy since he almost got there."
Dahlin and Thompson are the two best stars on the team and each signed for at least five more years. This is who the Sabres have to build around quickly, but it isn't looking great. Zach Benson, Josh Doan, Jack Quinn, and Jiri Kulich look like solid pieces, but there are plenty of injuries and players who may end up leaving.
Power was drafted first overall to a team that already had their franchise defenseman, who played top minutes and was on the top power play. Power will never take over Dahlin's spot unless Dahlin leaves, so with the smaller contract and while making less of an impact, the Sabres could end up seeing Power on the way out before his contract ends in 2031. Bowen Byram, another highly drafted defenseman, also won't get the opportunities he would on another team with Dahlin there, so he's had to play his off side and is on a short-term deal with a big decision coming sooner rather than later.
The rebuild and struggles have gone on so long and so many former Sabres have gone on to do great things elsewhere. At a certain point, something has to change and success has to be found, or it will be tough times in Buffalo for so much longer.
