Maple Leafs lose Auston Matthews, Anthony Stolarz to injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs are having a roller coaster of a start to the season, and Tuesday night in Boston, it went from bad to worse.

During the first period in a scrum in front, goaltender Anthony Stolarz was injured. He'd then leave the game in the first intermission, as Dennis Hildeby came out to start the second period. It's an upper body injury for Stolarz, but for now, it doesn't sound very serious.

"I don’t believe that’s serious. I think he’ll be fine," Berube said when asked about Stolarz' injury, according to Jonas Siegel. On the flip side, Leafs captain Auston Matthews left the game due to a lower-body injury, after taking an awkward hit from Bruins towering defenceman Nikita Zadorov.

Matthews had issues with his back for the past year, so this could be related to the ailment that kept him from being 100% healthy last season. Matthews will be re-evaluated on Wednesday, and a likely timetable with then be set for his return.

"I don’t know exactly. I can’t give you a timeline or (tell you) how serious it is right now. I’m not sure when he hurt it to be honest with you," coach Craig Berube said about Matthews, according to The Athletic's Siegel.

The Leafs fell to 8-8-1 on the year after their latest loss to the Bruins, who have owned the Maple Leafs the past decade, but also the past week. Toronto heads home to host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.
