Edmonton Oilers Looking for Specific Trade for Mangiapane

As we learned earlier this week, the Edmonton Oilers are actively shopping Andrew Mangiapane. The latest is that there is "some progress" on that front, according to insider David Pagnotta. The player's agent has gotten involved as well, as the two sides try to find the right deal.

But what is that right deal? Pagnotta did some snooping and said on The DFO Rundown that the Oilers essentially want to do right by Mangiapane and send him wherever it would be best for him, from an opportunity and ice time perspective.

It's the best 'fit' for him. That's how it was described to me: Finding the best fit overall, to maximize his talent, and exploit his talent. It hasn't worked out in Edmonton, he was bounced around the lineup. There wasn't solid footing. He wants to have that wherever he winds up—be it on another contender, or a bubble team, I think he's open to a number of options here.

Mangiapane has a full no-trade clause in the two-year, $3.6M AAV deal he signed with the Oilers this past July. But he will waive it for a move to a team that will give him the runway to return to being a regular, and a 15-16 minute per game player, as he was with the Calgary Flames for his last four seasons there.

In his career year in 2021-22, the left winger, now 29, popped 35 goals and had 55 points in a top-six role. Whether he can return to that sort of role and/or production remains to be seen. But he hopes to at least be given the chance to recapture that.

Aside from that breakout season, Mangiapane has been a reliable 14-to-18 goal man, providing solid secondary scoring, while playing his hard-working, two-way style. Sounds like the kind of skills that many contending teams could use as they head towards the playoffs.
