NHL Rumors: Hurricanes' Frederik Andersen Becoming Trade Candidate
Frederik Andersen trade candidate buzz grows in Carolina
With Bussi rolling and Pyotr Kochetkov in the mix, the Hurricanes are carrying three goalies, and that is a roster luxury most contenders cannot justify for long.
The Hockey News’ Adam Proteau floated the idea that if Carolina wants to turn surplus into help elsewhere, Andersen is the logical chip because teams around the league are always hunting for stable goaltending options.
Brandon Bussi is the 3rd goalie in the last 40 years to win 9 games in his first 10 career games.

This season, the 36-year-old holds an .875 save percentage, 3.15 GAA, and a 5-7-2 record across 14 starts.
Why Brandon Bussi’s surge changes the Hurricanes’ math
Bussi’s early-season run has been the head-turner, including a historic start after Carolina claimed him off waivers from the Florida Panthers.
Meanwhile, Andersen’s recent track record is tough to ignore. Injuries have limited his workload over the past two seasons, and his 2025-26 numbers have not helped his case.
Kochetkov has been steadier, and he is younger, cheaper, and fits the longer view if Carolina believes Bussi can keep giving them legitimate NHL minutes.

"The way I look at it, I've played better hockey, and I've had worse numbers. It doesn't look good, obviously. We're not getting the wins with me in the net lately, but I still feel like I've got my game. Maybe… pic.twitter.com/PhOp64r5gl
None of this guarantees a trade, but it does explain why the chatter is sticking. The goalie market rarely has true difference-makers available, and even a risk-reward veteran like Andersen can look attractive to a club that just needs competence and experience for the short term.
