Auston Matthews passes Mats Sundin as Maple Leafs all-time goal leader
Auston Matthews sits atop Toronto Maple Leafs history.
With two goals against the New York Islanders on Saturday night, Matthews tied, and surpassed Mats Sundin as the best goal scorer in franchise history. Matthews scored his 421st career goal against the Islanders, one a great feed from linemate Bobby McMann, setting up the one-timer.
Sundin had held the record since 2007, when he passed Darryl Sittler with his 390th goal as a Maple Leaf. Sundin played 981 games with the Leafs. Matthews accomplished the milestone in 664 contests.Making History pic.twitter.com/eZFBkT2bHM

Matthews is among the all-time greats. He ranks fifth in NHL history in goals per game, behind only Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux, Cy Denneny, and Babe Dye. Notably, Matthews has scored at a better per-game pace than the league's all-time goals leader, Alex Ovechkin.
