Montréal Canadiens Make Coaching Change

It has not been a stellar season between the pipes for the Montreal Canadiens. Goaltender coach Eric Raymond has now paid the price, being relieved of his duties. He's been replaced (on an "interim" basis for the rest of this season) by the AHL Laval Rockets goalie coach Marco Marciano.

The Habs' .884 save percentage ranks 28th in the NHL.

Insider Marco D'Amico said on the Starr/D'Amico Show today that "Sometimes, the message just isn't getting through (anymore)... It makes sense to make a switch... Marciano has been very, very strong in helping Laval Rocket goalies get ready for the NHL."

Canadiens' goaltending has been a big disappointment this season

Sam Montembault has been extremely inconsistent this season. After a breakout season last year, and three straight years of save percentages over the .900 mark, he's slumped to an untenable .869 Sv% this season in 20 starts.

Jakub Dobes has fared a bit better, with a 16-5-3 mark with a 2.96 GAA and an .890 save percentage, and youngster Jacob Fowler has performed reasonably well at the NHL level with a 2.62 GAA and a .902 save percentage. But all in all, much more was expected of the Habs' goaltending this season.

Raymond had been Montreal's goalie coach for the past five seasons.

The Canadiens' news release points out that Marciano has nearly 20 years of experience as a goaltending coach, and he's been with the Canadiens organization since 2013.

They are the second team to replace their goalie coach this season, following the New York Islanders, who have had a lot of success since their move.
