Oilers & Jets Emerging As Trade Partners

The Winnipeg Jets are in the throes of an ugly eight-game losing streak, plunging them to the very bottom of the Western Conference standings. This, from a team that won the Presidents' Trophy last season with the best record in the NHL.

But if they're not ready to throw in the towel, there are some things the Jets could look to fix. Like the desperate need for some scoring—any kind of scoring—outside of their top line.

The Edmonton Oilers happen to have a guy like that who has fallen out of favour around Oil Town. Andrew Mangiapane is squarely on the trade block, and his agent and the team are looking for a new location for the 29-year-old winger.

The latest report is that he'd be happy to waive his no-trade clause for a situation in which he'd be given the opportunity to thrive. The Jets could certainly be that situation, according to several sources.

Oilers & Jets need to swing a deal to send Mangiapane to Winnipeg

Oilers' beat writer and insider Jim Matheson says that the Jets make the most sense, given that they are "dying for secondary offence."

The exact same suggestion comes from insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic:

"Give me the Jets (for Mangiapane). They’re dying for any kind of secondary scoring," said LeBrun, echoing Matheson's call. "I think the fact Mangiapane has another year on his deal would actually be appealing to the Jets, whose playoff chances are certainly in trouble for this season but far from done."

Winnipeg is currently 15-20-4 going into Saturday's play, nine points back of a Wild Card spot in the West.

Mangiapane is in the first season of a two-year deal with a $3.6M cap hit. The Jets have $7.5M in cap space available at the moment, and are projected to have over $18M in space at the trade deadline.

Mangiapane is a reliable secondary scorer, registering in the 14-to-18 goal range every season over the previous six years, aside from his one big breakout campaign of 35 goals back in 2021-22.

He's struggling with the Oilers, however, this season, never really finding his fit with the team. He has five goals and 11 points in 40 games.
