Edmonton Oilers & Toronto Maple Leafs emerging as trade partners

The NHL's trade deadline is set for March 6, and once the Olympic roster freeze is over in less than two weeks, don't be surprised to see the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs complete a trade together.

Multiple reports have surfaced recently stating the Oilers and Maple Leafs are active in trade discussions, and have discussed multiple different scenarios. Their talks include one of Bobby McMann, Nic Roy, Oliver Ekman-Larsson or Scott Laughton heading to Edmonton.

The Oilers are in the market for a bottom-six versatile forward and a top-four defenceman, so it's no surprise to see these two teams align as trade partners. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are trying to re-tool on the fly and could see Oilers' youngsters Matt Savoie or Isaac Howard as trade chips they'd be interested in adding to their roster.

Money is going to become an issue here, as both teams have very limited cap space and any deal between the two clubs will have to balance itself out financially. There's also the fact Toronto isn't interested in a rebuild, and are instead re-tooling on the fly, so GM Brad Treliving will have to be careful navigating his transactions ahead of the deadline.

There's also a good chance another team could be involved in a deal including the Oilers and Maple Leafs. One team to keep an eye on - Carolina Hurricanes. They have a boat load of cap space and GM Eric Tulsky is going to be very aggressive trying to upgrade their roster ahead of Mar.6.
