Maple Leafs provide update on defenceman Morgan Rielly
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be finishing up their last two games before the Olympic break shorthanded on defence, as the team announced Monday that Morgan Rielly is dealing with an upper-body injury, and will not suit up in game action until the Olympics conclude.
Rielly was hurt in the Leafs/Vancouver Canucks game on Saturday night, and will miss the last two games of the Leafs road trip Monday and Tuesday against the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.
Word is the injury is something that has lingered for quite some time for Rielly, and enough is enough, he needs some rest and time away from the rink to fully healthy. Rielly's been under the gun this season in Toronto, as many around Leafs Nation are calling for him to be the first to be traded during the newfound sell mode for the Maple Leafs.
Rielly has recorded seven goals and 24 assists for 31 points in 54 games , which is his second-worst scoring pace since breaking out in the 2017-18 season. He has also struggled in his own zone, with a 0.149 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals against per 60 that is the 20th-worst among defensemen across the NHL.
