Blue Jackets Reveal Tough News on Damon Severson Injury

Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Damon Severson warms up before a game

The Columbus Blue Jackets will have to continue their Cinderella push for the playoffs without top-pairing defenseman Damon Severson. The team has revealed today at practice that Severson will be out "week to week" after leaving last night's game with an upper-body injury in the third period. Columbus lost a tough one, 2-1 to the Montreal Canadiens.

The injury occured when he went in for a shoulder-to-shoulder hit with the Habs' Zachary Bolduc.

Severson is in the middle of an eight-year, $50 million contract with Columbus, with a $6.25 million AAV.

Severson ruled out for extended period in midst of best season

He's having his best season with the Jackets, with 32 points in 71 games and a career-best plus/minus rating of +18. He's also blocked 86 shots.

Severson's role alongside top defender Zack Werenski could be filled by any of Ivan Provorov, Denton Mateychuk, Dante Fabbro or Erik Gudbranson, all of whom have spent some time paired with Werenski this season at one time or another.

The Blue Jackets have 10 games to play, and are currently tied for third place in the Metropolitan Division with the NY Islanders, but Columbus has a game in hand. The Ottawa Senators are only one point back of the Jackets & Isles, as the jockeying for playoff spots in the East is as tight as it can get.
