Kiefer Sherwood Signs Big Extension With Sharks

San Jose Sharks forward Kiefer Sherwood skates onto the ice during introductions

Pending UFA Kiefer Sherwood was a big trade acquisition for the San Jose Sharks back in January. But the team reportedly had some "sticker shock" once they sat down with the player's camp to talk extension. The two sides have now worked all that out, and Sherwood is on board with a new, rich, five-year extension in San Jose.

The contract will pay the physical, two-way forward $28.75 million, for a hefty $5.75 million AAV for the 30-year-old. The raise is a massive one from the the $1.5 million he had been earning annually on the two-year deal that expires at the end of the season.

It was originally thought that the $5 million mark was too pricey for the Sharks, but they were obviously willing to go further to get the NHL's all-time single-season hits leader signed.

“We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building," said GM Mike Grier. "The ingredients he brings to our line-up on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.”

Sharks thought about flipping Sherwood if extension wasn't reached

There were some reports that the Sharks might even flip Sherwood in another trade by this Friday's deadline if they couldn't get an extension done. But that's all water under the bridge now.

Sherwood has a goal and two points in five games with San Jose, along with a whopping 28 hits. He set the NHL record of 462 hits in a season last year, and now is up to 238 through 45 games in the 2025-26 campaign.

He also has 18 goals, one off his career-high of 19 set last season. His shot percentage since coming to the Sharks is way down, to just 5.6%, but once he gets back up to his typical 13-14%, more goals will come. He had the game-winner in Tuesday’s 7-5 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

The Sharks sent two second-round picks to Vancouver in return for Sherwood, beating out a large number of teams that had interest in the 6-foot forward.
