NHL Trade Rumors: Maple Leafs Trading 1 of 2 Goaltenders This Offseason
Keep an eye on the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer.
The Maple Leafs are in the process of changing up their management regime and from all accounts, it sounds like CEO Keith Pelley is trying to find a new Kyle Dubas, because all of the things he described the team was searching for, Dubas brings to the table. Regardless of who's in charge, expect to see the Leafs make an offseason trade involving a goaltender.
Toronto doesn't have much for prospects or draft picks in the cupboards, so they're expected to move one of Anthony Stolarz or Dennis Hildeby this offseason to try and shore up the rest of their lineup. Which will take time and much more than just one trade to fill the holes.
The Leafs are searching for a top-line right winger to play with Auston Matthews on a daily basis. They're in search of a third-line center, who can play at both ends of the rink and make a difference, and they're going to reshape half of their defense core, so don't be surprised to see Morgan Rielly, Simon Benoit, and Brandon Carlo replaced.
Stolarz has been in and out of the lineup since he joined the Leafs, and has a new contract extension kicking in on July 1. Stolarz goes from $2.5 million AAV up to $3.75 million AAV through the 2030 season, and he holds a 16-team no-trade clause. Stolarz has some say in the matter and don't be surprised to see the Edmonton Oilers involved this offseason.
As for Hildeby, he's eight years younger than Stolarz and has a ton of potential. He also led the Leafs goaltenders in save percentage this season and is under contract for next season at just $841,667. Both of these goalies could fetch a decent return on the trade market, but teams may be willing to spend more on tapping into Hildeby's potential, instead of paying a little more for an oft-injured Stolarz.
Look out for the Leafs, making roster changes are on the way once they get someone hired as GM.
