Maple Leafs Rejecting Jake McCabe Trade Offers
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the middle of retooling their roster on the fly this summer, but as far as current players go, don't expect to see defenceman Jake McCabe traded.John Chayka has been busy trading away Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit, adding Emil Andrea, and completing a sign-and-trade for Darren Raddysh. Chayka also has the first overall pick to work with next Friday in Buffalo, and all signs are pointing to Gavin McKenna. The Leafs are going to make more moves, but McCabe's contract and production last season are two big reasons Chayka doesn't want to budge on offers.
Darren Dreger: Re Maple Leafs: I know that there are calls coming in on Jake McCabe; teams continue to do their work around McCabe in terms of his health and what his future might look like - That's Hockey (6/17)
McCabe, 32, has four years left on his contract at just $4.5 million AAV, and with a full no-trade clause covering this season, a trade seemed like a huge reach in the first place, even before Chayka took over. McCabe was Toronto's best all-around defenceman last season, playing 22:24 a night, including major minutes killing penalties.
McCabe chipped in with 25 points, and landed 104 hits, while blocking 190 shots. McCabe will stay in Toronto for this season and don't expect to see a trade. With that said, the Leafs continue to work then phones listening to offers on Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo.
Chayka wants to reshape his blueline and ensure there's plenty of speed, mobility, and puck-moving capabilities.
