Shocking Move As Calgary Flames Put Connor Zary On Trade Block

In a surprising move, the Calgary Flames are making one of their supposedly promising young players available by trade. Connor Zary is out there for the taking, per insider Darren Dreger.

Dreger adds that the Flames are looking for a second-round pick in return for Zary. He has two years remaining on his contract with a $3.775 million AAV.

The 24-year-old was a first-round pick by Calgary in the 2020 NHL Draft, and has been nothing if not consistent in his three years with the Flames, averaging 13 goals and 29 points over that time. But his ice time took a hit this past season as the team started to lose confidence in him, and he logged just 14:22 TOI per night, down about 90 seconds from the previous season. He played lower in the lineup than had been expected.

The feisty two-way forward plays all 200 feet, but his lack of progress at the offensive end seems to have dropped him out of the Flames' plans for the future. Granted, injuries may have played a role in allowing him to really hit his stride, but he produced the lowest numbers of his three seasons this past year, with just 12 goals and 25 points.

Some team around the league will surely be interested in giving Zary a shot at that price, and with a little more leash, and good health, he may be able to up his game.
