Second-round pick as compensensation if Mammoth don't match
According to reports, Utah had a chance to acquire something at the 2026 Draft for Hayton in a proposed deal with New Jersey, but they bailed on it at the last minute.
Sources say that Utah and New Jersey had a deal in place for Barrett Hayton at the draft that Utah pulled out of late.

Now the Mammoth will have a week to match the offer. If they decide not to, the Devils will have to send them a second-round pick in next year's NHL Draft as compensation. The offer came in just a few dollars below the next threshold of compensation, which is much more onerous, at first- and third-round picks.
It's unknown if the original deal on Draft Day was for more or less than the second-rounder that Utah stands to get in return. The Mammoth filed club-elected arbitration on Hayton, which still allowed him to be offer sheet eligible (if a player files the arbitration, they become ineligible).
Of note, AFP Analytics had him projected for a $5.75 million AAV on a three-year contract as an RFA.
Hayton has been with the Mammoth franchise since Arizona drafted him with the 5th pick overall in the 2018 Entry Draft. He has never quite panned out to match that draft slot. His high-water mark was the 2024-25 season when he scored 20 goals with 46 points. This year, he slid back down to 10 goals and 25 points.
