Maple Leafs Make Shocking Hire Of Senators' Legend Daniel Alfredsson

In a stunning move, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be adding Ottawa Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson to the coaching staff, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Alfredsson has been an assistant coach in Ottawa for the last 3 seasons, and now is expected to become the Maple Leafs’ associate head coach.

Friedman explains just how bizarre this move is:

It’s just so incredibly weird. During the ferocious Battles of Ontario — four playoff series in five years at the start of this century — Alfredsson and Mats Sundin captained these bitter rivals. They were friendly and held great respect for one another, but there was nothing but disdain and hatred between these two teams on the ice.

As Friedman notes, Sundin and Alfredsson won Olympic gold together as Swedish teammates.

Alfredsson, now 53, spent 17 years with the Senators, and was captain for 14 of those seasons. He recorded 426 goals, 682 assists, 1,108 points and a plus-minus of +153 in 1,178 games with Ottawa.

Now, he's a member of the Maple Leafs. Wow.
