Sidney Crosby Is Cheering For Alex Ovechkin

Since they both entered the NHL during the 2005-06 season, fans have always compared Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Due to this and the fact that they ended up in the same division, they've built a rivalry over the years. Yet, even with this being so, Crosby is rooting for Ovechkin to beat Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record, according to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.

At this present time, Ovechkin has 730 career goals and trails Gretzky by 164. Ovechkin signed a five-year contract with the Capitals this summer, so he has plenty of time to catch him. If he averages 33 goals per season during this contract run, he will take over the record.

In 45 games this past season, Ovechkin scored 24 goals and recorded 42 total points. If he stayed fully healthy over an 82-game schedule, he would have been on pace for 43 goals. If he stays this effective at goal-scoring, the chance of him catching Gretzky is certainly high.

Nonetheless, this is a kind gesture by Crosby. Both of these players have had marvelous careers and it will be sad when they retire later down the road.
