Insider Has Definitive Answer to the Question, Could The Maple Leafs Move Morgan Rielly?
The Toronto Maple Leafs' continued playoff woes have led to all the talk this offseason about the 'Core Four' needing to be broken up. But what about the longest-serving Leaf of all, defenseman Morgan Rielly? Could the team move on from their 12-year veteran blueliner?
If you're looking for the answer to that question, insider Pierre LeBrun has you covered, as he said definitively on TSN's That's Hockey:
Who has had more playoff scarring than Morgan Rielly? People have wondered, 'Could the Leafs go to him and ask him to waive his no-move in order to try and bring more DNA change?' The answer is ‘No Chance’, from what we understand. He has a full no-move (clause). He loves being a Leaf, and it’s absolutely his right to invoke the no-trade… So I don’t think that needs to be a talking point going forward here.
Leafs' Morgan Rielly will not be traded, says NHL insider
Rielly has five years to run on his eight-year deal with a $7.5 million cap hit. And though he was named on Frank Seravalli's Top 20 most likely to be traded list this summer, that full no-move clause is in effect for three more years, at which point it changes to a 10-team no-trade list.
With four seasons of 50+ points in his past, Rielly was once a nice offensive force, serving as the quarterback on the Leafs' first power play unit. But the strong puck-moving skills have slipped for the 31-year-old, and he was stripped of his PP1 duties as well this past season.
Rielly finished the year with 41 points in 82 games, the 0.50 points-per-game mark his lowest in eight seasons. His 21:23 average TOI was his lowest ice time in a decade.
If the Leafs are looking for an elite puck-mover, they'll have to look at the trade market this offseason.
