NHL Rumors: 3 Dallas Stars Not Likely to Return Next Season

The Dallas Stars had a great chance to win the Stanley Cup this season, but unfortunately thanks to the Edmonton Oilers, once again were ousted in the Western Conference Final. After making several trades ahead of the deadline, and unloading some picks and prospects, the Stars went all in and missed.

Now, there's going to be several changes to the roster as GM Jim Nill only has 16 players signed for next season currently, and is projected to have less than $5 million in cap space. Something has to give for the Stars.

Here's three players who aren't expected back next season:

Mason Marchment

Marchment had a dismal playoffs, scoring just one goal in 18 games. The power forward is signed for $4.5 million next season, the last on his current deal. Marchment owns a 10-team no-trade clause so he'll have some say in the matter, but fully expect to see Marchment available at the NHL Draft and ahead of July 1st when free agency opens.

Evgenii Dadonov

One goal and four points in 16 playoff games won't cut it for the veteran forward. Dadonov is headed for free agency and won't be in the Stars plans. He's best suited on a second line and receiving second power play time, but the only way he stays in Dallas is close to league minimum. 20 goals in 80 regular season games won't go unnoticed from other GM's, so look for Dadonov to catch on somewhere else for around $2.5-3 million.

Brendan Smith

The veteran defenceman will head to free agency trying to sign one more NHL contract. Smith, 36, appeared in 32 regular season games, scoring once, and adding five assists. Dallas has five d-men signed for next season and will look to bring in some younger talent to help push for another playoff run next season. Look for Smith to be on the Red Wings, and Rangers radar come July.
