NHL Rumors: Flyers' GM Looking to Sign Free-Agent Center

The Philadelphia Flyers are a team to watch this summer.

GM Danny Briere reportedly has interest in finding stop-gap options at center ice this offseason, and has engaged in trade talks with a number of teams. According to Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco, Briere will be busy this summer, and expect to see a move down the middle of the ice.

Adding a center is the Flyers’ top priority, though it may be more in the way of a depth move than a major splash. I believe the Flyers are in the market for a stopgap type of addition at center, a player who can bridge the gap over the next few seasons while they look to develop home grown talent down the middle. A player like Adam Gaudette is someone I think the Flyers could look at in free agency; he is still only 28 and is coming off a career best 19 goals with the Ottawa Senators.

Briere has $18.9 million in cap space to work with, but has to deal with almost $7 million in dead cap space thanks to buyouts and salary retention. While Gaudette may be an option, players like Jack Roslovic on the open market could be a free-agent target for Briere, along with Christian Dvorak.

The Flyers missed the playoffs last season and are looking to take a major jump next season. Briere has his work cut out for him, as the roster has significant holes, and they have limited trade chips within the organization.
