NHL Rumors: Trade talks heating up on Canucks' Elias Pettersson
The Vancouver Canucks have just under a week to move Elias Pettersson without having to worry about a no-movement clause. Pettersson's protection kicks in July 1st, and talks have ramped up in a major way over the course of the last two weeks.
The Canucks are reportedly listening to trade offers as they decide what the future holds for their former first-round pick. Pettersson is owed $11.6 million AAV through the 2031-32 season, and while his value isn't necessarily peaking at the moment, the Canucks could still fetch a significant return via trade.
Pettersson recorded 45 points in 64 games last season and could very well be on the radar of teams looking to make a splash this summer, which include the Utah Mammoth, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Anaheim Ducks. All three teams will be in the mix, and have the assets, and more importantly the cap space to add Pettersson's cap hit to their books.
The Canucks could look very different next season, and beyond, as Brock Boeser is expected to leave as a free agent, and there's been rumblings that captain Quinn Hughes is looking to reunite with his brothers in New Jersey. A new core could be in place in no time in Vancouver, and it all starts with Pettersson being dealt.
Keep an eye on the Canucks. They have some big names in play, they have a new sense of direction, a new coach behind the bench, and starting next season, could have a slew of new players on their roster. Don't be surprised to see the Canucks shopping their first-round pick as well, as no stone will be left unturned this offseason.
