Ducks Rumors: Mason McTavish Upset With Role In Anaheim

Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish reacts after scoring goal in 2025 game.

Mason McTavish may be the most intriguing name still unsigned this NHL offseason.

The Anaheim Ducks forward remains a restricted free agent, and while Anaheim holds the right to match any offer sheet, NHL insider Jeff Marek reports that McTavish is on the radar of multiple teams. His name has surfaced in trade rumors, and with reported frustration over his role in Anaheim, questions about his future are growing louder.

McTavish Still Eligible for Offer Sheet, Frustrated by Role

Unlike teammate Lukas Dostal, who filed for salary arbitration and is no longer eligible for an offer sheet, McTavish did not elect arbitration, making him fair game for offer sheets. According to Evolving Hockey projections, a potential six-year, $6.683 million AAV offer could test the Ducks' resolve.

Meanwhile, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that McTavish is “not happy” with his reduced role in Anaheim, which has taken a hit due to the emergence of Leo Carlsson. After posting a career-best 52 points (22G, 30A) last season, the 22-year-old feels underutilized.

Canadiens Connection and Trade Possibilities

Pagnotta recently speculated that the Montreal Canadiens could be monitoring the McTavish situation. Montreal is searching for a second-line center, and McTavish fits the mold. The Canadiens, however, are low on trade capital after moves for Noah Dobson and Zachary Bolduc.

While Pat Verbeek is unlikely to trade McTavish without a serious return, mounting frustration from the player could shift the balance. McTavish’s size (6'1", 219 lbs), skillset, and all-around game make him an attractive piece for teams looking to make a splash, whether by trade or offer sheet.
