Oilers Trying To Extend Jake Walman; 3 Comparable Contracts Listed

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman celebrates after scoring a goal against the Florida Panthers in the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Edmonton Oilers are trying to get ahead of the 2026 free agency market by working on an extension for defenseman Jake Walman, according to Kurt Leavins of The Edmonton Journal.

Oilers Looking to Extend Jake Walman With UFA Looming

Walman is entering the final year of his $3.4 million deal and could be in high demand next summer after a strong finish to the 2024–25 season and a breakout playoff performance.

Leavins believes the Oilers would be wise to lock him up now before his value skyrockets. Walman, 29, posted 10 points in 22 playoff games and proved to be a versatile, high-minute blueliner. He played key minutes alongside Darnell Nurse and John Klingberg, excelling on both sides of the ice while showing potential as a second power-play unit quarterback.

With John Klingberg gone and Mattias Ekholm’s minutes likely to be monitored, Walman is expected to take on even more responsibility this season.

Contract Comparables: Montour, Pionk, Hanifin

Three key comparables stand out for Walman’s next deal: Brandon Montour ($7M AAV), Neal Pionk ($7M), and Noah Hanifin ($7.35M), as pointed out by Leavins.

All three are around Walman’s age and bring similar production and usage profiles. Walman’s ability to defend top competition at five-on-five while providing offensive support, plus his ability to switch to the right side, makes him an asset worth investing in now. If Edmonton waits, Walman’s market value could climb into that $7 million range, particularly if he produces in a top-four role all season long.
