Columbus Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov has officially requested a trade, citing "misunderstandings" with head coach Dean Evason.

Yegor Chinakhov Requests Trade from Blue Jackets After Coaching Rift

The 24-year-old winger’s agent, Shumi Babaev, shared the request on X, noting that Chinakhov wants a change of scenery but plans to stay in the NHL. Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell confirmed the request and said he’s open to trading the former first-round pick, but only for the right return.

Chinakhov was scratched repeatedly after returning from a back injury late last season, playing just one of Columbus’s final 13 games. His limited role and lack of communication to why reportedly led to frustration.

Despite showing flashes of scoring talent, he posted 15 points in 30 games last year, his durability remains a concern, having never played more than 62 games in a season. Still, Chinakhov's shot metrics and skating speed rank among the league’s elite, making him an intriguing trade candidate.

Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Chicago Blackhawks could be interested, especially if Columbus is willing to accept a modest return. With one year left on his $2.1 million deal before hitting RFA status, Chinakhov’s contract is affordable, and his upside remains intriguing if he can stay healthy and find a better fit.
