Flames Rumors: Update On Contract Talks On Still Unsigned RFA Connor Zary

Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary & Nazem Kadri react during 2025 game.

The Calgary Flames are still working to finalize a new contract with restricted free agent forward Connor Zary, and with August approaching, fans are beginning to wonder when the deal will get done.

General manager Craig Conroy addressed the situation this week, saying negotiations remain ongoing but stressed that the team isn’t concerned.

“It’s been slow,” Conroy told Sportsnet 960’s Sportsnet Today. “I understand they have a position they’ve taken, and we kind of have a position we’re at. We know it’s going to get done. In the end, it always does.” Conroy added that both sides would like the deal finished quickly but emphasized there’s still plenty of time before training camp begins.

Flames Prefer a Bridge Deal While Zary Wants Term

Reports indicate the primary sticking point is contract length. Zary’s camp has pushed for a long-term extension, while the Flames would prefer a shorter-term bridge deal to further evaluate the 23-year-old after an injury-shortened season.

Selected 24th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Zary tallied 13 goals and 27 points in 54 games last year despite two knee injuries that sidelined him for significant stretches.

Conroy confirmed Zary remains a priority signing for the Flames as the offseason winds down. “He’s a huge priority for us and we’re going to get it done, it’s just a matter of when,” he said. With other RFAs like Matt Coronato and Kevin Bahl already locked up, Zary’s deal represents the final major piece of business for Calgary before camp opens.
